Every year on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). This year’s campaign, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, places humanity at the heart of every blood donation. The event raises awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, while thanking voluntary, unpaid donors for their life‑saving gifts. On 17 June 2026, the LuxDev Asia Office, together with the Health and nutrition programme, hosted a blood donation drive at the Regional Office in Vientiane Capital to mark WBDD. LuxDev teams in the provinces also joined the initiative by organising activities in their respective locations.

For the second year in a row, the blood donation drive brought together LuxDev colleagues and representatives from the Embassy of Luxembourg, reflecting a shared commitment to promoting health and well‑being across Lao PDR.

I am really grateful that so many of our colleagues are participating in the “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.” event. I can only repeat what I have said last year : giving blood is so much more than giving money or training. It is about empathy and saving the lives of people you don’t even know. Thank you !

The National Blood Institute would like to extend sincere appreciation and recognition to all regular blood donors, as well as to government agencies, development partners, embassies, international organisations, private companies and institutions that actively encourage their staff and communities to participate in voluntary blood donation activities. Their continued commitment and support are vital to strengthening the national blood supply and improving health outcomes across the country.

Our team in provinces

Support from Luxembourg to Laos

In March 2025, Luxembourg donated high‑tech blood cold chain equipment worth EUR 2.1 million through the Health and nutrition programme. Distributed at central, provincial and district levels, this equipment strengthens Lao PDR’s blood transfusion services and ensures a reliable, safe supply of blood products nationwide.

This investment plays a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the blood cold chain, ensuring that blood products are stored and transported safely from donation centres to hospitals and health facilities, thereby safeguarding the cold chain. It supports timely and effective responses to emergencies and contributes to ambitious national goals to increase blood donations.

This year, Luxembourg teams contributed to filling the fridges once again with life-saving blood. This serves as a powerful reminder that development is not only about infrastructure and capacity building, but also about people coming together to make a difference.

Every donation counts and can make a real difference for several important reasons :

  • irreplaceable resource : blood cannot be manufactured; it only comes from generous donors ;
